Metric Ikitoelagi is the Rubgy coach for Niue, one of the smallest island nations in the world. I met Metric in a hotel lobby in PNG. He shared with me how he’d challenged his team to get their hearts right with God, and that he’d seen a massive change in them, many of them had come back to a relationship with God! Listen in to his story!
With the ball tampering scandal and all the drama surrounding international cricket, it’s easy to be disillusioned. For one cricketer who is a man of faith who is Marnus Labuschagne who plays for Queensland as well as the Brisbane Heat. On the bottom of his cricket bat he has the verse Isaiah 40:31, which says “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” A great verse for any cricketer. Marnus that playing elite cricket as a christian can be challenging. He says that the environment that you’re surrounded with isn’t really ideal at times. And you tend to be away from home a lot, but God has used him in many ways to shine a light on the cricket field. Including opportunities to pray for the team before they go out on the field. He’s also part of a WhatsApp group called Front Foot Faith which has got about 30 professional cricketers around the world who share the christian faith. He said that it’s important that cricket doesn’t become the centre of your life. That you’re not putting anything ahead of God. And he knows that his talent is a blessing from God and his relationship with God should always come first. With that kind of attitude I think that he’ll go a long way. Lets pray for cricketers like Marnus and other faith based sporting heroes to be an example to the next generation.
Marnus Labuschagne is a South African-born cricketer who made his debut for Queensland during the 2014 Sheffield Shield season. He also plays for the Brisbane Heat. Listen in to hear about his faith & the importance of prayer in his life as an elite sportsman. He also shares how his mother has been particularly helpful, leaving Bible verses around the house and even writing them in his cricket shoes.
