One of the most popular Christian songs ever is “I Can Only Imagine” by MercyMe. The song was written by Bart Millard after a tough time in life. In the movie of the same name, “I Can Only Imagine”, it tells the story of how Bart was abused as a young man. His mother abandoned him and his father beat him up regularly. After graduating from high school, he left and ended up joining a Christian band, MercyMe. After a few years on the road, he really struggled to connect with audiences and was challenged to really search his heart as to why he wasn’t connecting. After travelling home to visit his father, he realized that his father had changed. His father had started reading the Bible and praying, and really was transformed. Bart had to find it in his heart to forgive his father. Bart Millard had a father wound that needed to be healed. He then found out that his father had a terminal illness, and was able to spend the last days of his father’s life caring for him. And it was out of that time of healing and restoration that he ended up writing the song “I Can Only Imagine”. What a great story of redemption and tranformation for Bart’s family, knowing that his father would be in heaven forever, with a new body. Walking by the side of his Saviour.
