Optimist [Godspot]

Are you an optimist or a pessimist? Is the cup half full or half empty? There’s a great story that’s told about a pair of twin boys where one was an optimist and the other was a pessimist. On the twins birthday when the boys were at school, the father loaded the pessimists room with every imaginable toy and game. The optimist’s room, he loaded with horse manure. That night the father passed by the pessimist’s room and found him sitting amidst his new gifts crying bitterly. “Why are you crying?”, the father asked.

  • Because my friends will be jealous.
  • I’ll have to read the instructions.
  • I’ll constantly need batteries.
  • My toys will all get broken.

…answered the pessimist.

And passing the optimist’s room, the father found him dancing for joy and searching through the pile of manure. “What are you so happy about?”, asked the father. The optimist boy replied, “Well there’s got to be a pony in here somewhere!”

The truth is, we get to choose what perspective we have in life. The bible tells us in Philippians 4:8 “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Lets take this advise and look for the good in all things and lets thank God for all the blessings we have received.

Jesus [Godspot]

Nicky Gumbel the founder of the Alpha Course tells the story about how he met Eric Idle, one of the comedians behind the famous Monty Python films. They sat next to each other on a chair lift in the Swiss Alps just after Nicky had conducted a wedding. He said they had a great chat together. And Eric said that he wouldn’t call himself a Christian, but he’ll never forget what he said about Jesus. We look for comedy in the gospels. We look to poke fun at Jesus for the things he said, but we couldn’t. We found that Jesus’ teaching was brilliant and it all seemed to make sense. The truth is that Jesus’ teaching has become the foundation of entire civilisations. Many laws that we have today are based on the teachings of Jesus. In John 14:6, Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No man will come to the Father except through me.” The truth is even though Jesus had great teaching, the reason that he came was to point the way to the Father in heaven.

Grace [Godspot]

Chuck Swindoll shares in his book the “The Grace Awakening” about how grace is risky. He said lets imagine that you have a six year old son whom you love dearly. Tragically one day you find out that your son has been horribly murdered. After a length search, the investigators of the crime find the killer. You have a choice. If you used every means in your power to kill the murderer for his crime, that would be vengeance. If, however, you’re content to sit back and let the legal authorities take over and perform a fair trial and he pleads guilty and the sentence is capital punishment, then that is justice. But if you should plead for the pardon of the murderer, forgive him completely, invite him into your home and adopt him as your own son, that is Grace. The Bible says in Ephesians 2:8, “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.” Maybe today is the day for you to receive the free gift of the grace of God.

Eagles [Godspot]

I love watching eagles. They spread their massive wings and the wings lift them up to new heights. Did you know that eagles don’t fight snakes on the ground? They pick them up into the sky and change the battleground. In the sky, the snake has no stamina, no power and no balance in the air. Snakes become week, useless and vulnerable. Unlike on the ground where they’re powerful, wise and deadly. If you’re going through a spiritual battle, take your fight into the spiritual realm through prayer. When you’re in the spiritual realm, God takes over your battles. Don’t fight the enemy in his realm. Change the battleground like the eagle and let God take charge through your earnest prayers. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16, “Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” Make today the day that you choose to soar like an eagle.

Bridge [Godspot]

Bob Gass from “The Word for Today” shares the story about John Griffith, the railway controller. His responsibility was for a draw bridge over the Mississippi River. One day he took his young son to work with him. After putting the massive draw bridge up, Griffith was eating lunch when suddenly he heard the whistle for the Memphis Express roaring towards the crossing. Leaping from the observation deck, he ran to throw the control switch. Glancing down, his heart stopped. His son had fallen into the gears, trapping his legs into the cogs. Desperately he tried to devise a rescue plan, but there was no time. His son was down there, but there were 400 passengers on the train. Griffith knew what he had to do. Burying his face in his arm, he pushed the master switch just in time to lower the bridge into place as the train thundered across. Then raising his head he looked into the passing windows with tear filled eyes. There were businessmen casually reading the newspaper. Ladies sipping coffee and children eating ice cream. Nobody even looked at the controller house or glanced down at the great gearbox. In agony Griffith cried out, “I sacrificed my son for you people! Don’t you care?!” But the train rushed by. Nobody heard the anguished father’s words. Think of the sacrifice that John Griffith made to save everyone on that train. It’s a pail comparison to the sacrifice that our heavenly father made when he gave his one and only son for us. John 3:16 tells us that “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Have you thanked God today for the sacrifice he made by giving his one and only son for us? Maybe today is the day to thank him and get your heart right with God.

Aslan [Godspot]

In his book “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”, C.S. Lewis described a world where truth and values had been usurped by another ideology. It was an ideology that created a world where it was always winter and never Christmas. And anyone that opposed it faced suffering and persecution. Many are noticing that in this day and age, there is a similar threat to freedom of religion and of freedom of speech. I love the famous quote from Voltaire. He said, “I do not agree with what you have to say, but, I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.” The truth is that when you stand up for something, you will always have people that disagree. And even though it might feel like the winter is going on forever, remember the good news in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”. Aslan the lion comes to the rescue and Christmas finally comes. In the book of revelation in the Bible, it tells us that Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah, and he’s already triumphed. Jesus came once 2,000 years ago as our saviour. He’s coming back one day as the great judge, as the Lion of the tribe of Judah. And no matter how dark things get, the Bible tells us to watch and be ready for his return.
